Meet Shelby Kay
Shelby Kay is a small-town South Dakota musician with a little country, a little southern hillbilly, a touch of rock ‘n’ roll, and a whole lot of love for bringing people together through music.
With the encouragement of her family and mentors, Shelby has been playing music since she was 11 years old. She started out performing at county fairs, community events, and pretty much anywhere there was an opportunity to pick up a guitar and sing. A lifelong “band nerd,” she learned piano, drums, ukulele, woodwinds, and just about anything else she could get her hands on. Her love for 80s rock came from singing in her brother’s band, Oryx, where she got to experience a whole different side of music.
In 2023, Shelby packed up and headed to Tennessee, chasing horses and her musical dreams in Nashville. When the industry wasn’t quite what she imagined, it led her to a nearby town to start over—and eventually brought her back home to South Dakota to start over again, this time with a different perspective and a promise to herself: make music a life, not just a dream.
Today, Shelby brings her own mix of country, rock, pop, alternative, and songs from just about every era and genre to stages throughout South Dakota and beyond. Known for putting her own spin on familiar songs, she builds each show around the people in the room—taking requests, reading the crowd, and keeping things familiar, fun, and a little unpredictable.
She still writes music of her own and plans to share those songs with the world when the time is right. For now, she’s doing exactly what she promised herself she would do: making music a lifestyle.
